Microfinance for Climate

Expanding financial access for climate-resilient communities across Tanzania and Africa. We fill the gap of climate finance for the private and vulnerable sectors through microfinance and inclusive finance.

Our overarching goals align with low-carbon, climate-resilient pathways and adaptation outcomes. We focus on three pillars: Keep 1.5°C Alive, Mobilize Support for Climate Solutions, and Foster Partnerships to scale impact across the continent.

We establish the flagship Climate-Smart Microfinance Initiative in Tanzania, using the Central Bank of Tanzania license to de-risk and scale climate investment. From Tanzania, we replicate and scale proven models across Africa.

Our Focus Areas

Capacity building for financial institutions and communities; empowering adoption of climate-smart technologies and resilient practices; pioneering finance for recovery, resilience, and food security; and catalyzing equitable energy access and transition.

We mobilize support by securing financial resources and de-risking against climate shocks through blended finance and guarantee mechanisms. We foster partnerships with multilateral funds, bilateral finance, development banks, and private investment to ensure capital flows where it is needed most.

Integrating Microfinance with Climate Finance

We support the design and implementation of blended finance models that combine concessional climate funding with commercial microfinance to reduce risk and extend reach.

Our approach emphasizes risk mitigation through guarantee mechanisms, ESG-aligned lending criteria, and data-driven credit scoring that accounts for climate vulnerabilities and adaptive capacity.

By linking microfinance institutions with climate finance pipelines, we help bridge the gap between global climate commitments and local financial inclusion, ensuring that the most climate-vulnerable communities can access the capital they need to adapt and thrive.
